Glass

Studio glass or glass sculpture is the modern use of glass as an artistic medium to produce sculptures or three-dimensional artworks. Specific approaches include working glass at room temperature cold working, stained glass, working glass in a torch flame (lampworking), glass beadmaking, glass casting, glass fusing, and, most notably, glass blowing.

British Glass Art owes much to the long history of craft. The majority of its glass blowers who operate small studio furnaces produce aesthetically beautiful though primarily functional objects. Technical skill as a blower is given as much importance as the artistic intent.

Ceramics

In art history, ceramics and ceramic art mean art objects such as figures, tiles, and tableware made from clay and other raw materials by the process of pottery. Some ceramic products are regarded as fine art, while others are regarded as decorative, industrial or applied art objects, or as artifacts in archaeology. They may be made by one individual or in a factory where a group of people design, make and decorate the ware. Decorative ceramics are sometimes called "art pottery".

Studio pottery is made by artists working alone or in small groups, producing unique items or short runs, typically with all stages of manufacture carried out by one individual. It is represented by potters all over the world but has strong roots in Britain.

Pyrography

Pyrography is the word taken from the Greeks meaning fire and markings - it is the art of decorating a receptive surface with a heated tool. Many different materials, such as leather, gourd, horn, and bone can be used as a working surface for pyrography, but wood is perhaps the most common, so the pyrography is often called "woodburning."

This is a bit of a misnomer, however, since it implies the art form is restricted to wood, which it is not. With specialized tools and the necessary level of skill, the pyrographer can produce pictorial work on any receptive surface as subtle in the use of line and shading as that of any other monochrome art form.

Venue Information

There are two waymarked Nature Trails; one being 1½ and the other 2½ miles long. Also numerous paths in the woodlands to explore. There is no charge to enjoy the Country Park, which is open every day to the public and car parking is free.

The Sandringham Estate lies within the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and runs from the marshland on the Wash over a strip of greensand, running North and South up the chalkland which comprises the central part of East Anglia. The Country Park area is situated on the greensand strip which has layers of carrstone, clay and sand at the surface, giving coarse sandy, free draining and infertile soils.

Flowers in the Park

Up until about 100 years ago most of the Country Park area was open heathland and grassland, with a few clumps of trees struggling to survive the coastal winds and hordes of rabbits.

All this has gradually been changed by fencing, draining, planting of trees and a reduction in the number of rabbits. Today whether you visit the Country Park in May/June when the Rhododendrons are in bloom; in the Autumn when the woods are bright with colour and the ground covered with acorns and chestnuts; or in the Winter when the hoar frost may make the Birch trees gleam white against a darkening sky, you will find yourself in a living landscape.
